Top 5 Free MMORPGs 2011

Here is a list of some of our favorite free to play MMORPGs in 2011. There are actually a lot more than just five good online multiplayer games so please feel free to look around this website at other lists and find other good MMORPGs.

Runes of Magic – with over 5 million registered users, Runes of Magic is one of the most popular and successful free-to-play MMORPGs on the market. Players will love the exciting, multi-layered story, driven by more than 2,700 quests set in the atmospheric fantasy world of Taborea which spreads over two continents. Thanks to comprehensive crafting and ranking systems, gripping player vs. player features such as arenas and open battlefields, flexible and extensive customization of the user interface, a selection of demanding dungeons and many other features ‘Runes of Magic’ has something for everyone.

Vindictus –  is a fast-paced, 3D, fantasy MMORPG brawler. Based on Celtic mythology, Vindictus allows players to fight their way through instanced stages with parties of up to four players. The game has realistic graphics, and features hack and slash style gameplay.
World of Tanks – this free action MMO is a certified blockbuster hit, with over 18 million players worldwide. World of Tanks is the first and only team-based MMO action game dedicated to armored warfare. Players control hundreds of historically accurate armored vehicles from America, Germany, the Soviet Union, etc. It’s not all about controlling and upgrading your tank, though. In the World of Tanks, victory is achieved through teamwork. It is only by combining your combat skills with those of the other members of your team, each playing their own role on the battlefield, that you can win battles. The game has been praised for its straightforward controls, fun shooter-style gameplay, and the fact that battles are evenly matched – newbies fight with other newbies while experts with monster machines of destruction don’t get to steamroll the newcomers.

League of Legends – four million players play League of Legends everyday, that’s how popular this game is and why it is in this list of the Top 5 Free MMORPGs 2011. LoL features fast and fun session-based, multiplayer battles against rival teams. During each online multiplayer session, gamers will choose one of dozens of unique Champions wielding diverse skills and abilities, and engage in fast-paced team-oriented combat to defeat enemy minions, foul beasts, deadly turrets and enemy Champions. This is somewhat similar in gameplay to the Warcraft 3 mod DotA-Allstars. This is because the dev team of League of Legends includes some of the creators of DotA-Allstars. LoL is sometimes called a DotA clone.

Lord of the Rings Online – based on JRR Tolkien’s fantasy series Lord of the Rings, this MMORPG is different from the other games listed here because it was built and developed for Western gamers, with an emphasis on more photo-realistic graphics and classic RPG gameplay. Its top features include a huge game world, a unique PvP “Monster Play” mode where level 10 players can create a max level monster for PvP, player housing and story-driven quests. Another great gameplay feature are the “skirmishes” in which players must win a combat scenarios like fighting a horde that is trying to overrun a fortress. LOTRO is a big-budget AAA title that was originally pay to play but has now converted to the free to play model.

Honorable mention:

S4 League – is very popular fast-paced, multiplayer third-person shooter. Featuring eight distinct character classes, team-focused gameplay modes, and a wide variety of weaponry and skills to wield, S4 League is fun, fast and free to play.
